Morse Code Audio Decoder
A Morse code audio decoder is a tool that listens to Morse code beeps and writes them out as text. Upload a recording or use your microphone, and the decoder measures every beep and pause to find the letters.

Bright bars are beeps above the red threshold line. Move the threshold if letters run together or break apart.
Our decoder finds the strongest tone between 250 and 1,500 Hz, filters out other sounds, works out the sending speed on its own, and shows you the signal it heard so you can tune the threshold.

What Is a Morse Code Audio Decoder?
A Morse code audio decoder is a program that converts the on-off rhythm of a tone into dots, dashes and letters. It decides that a short beep is a dot, a beep about 3 times longer is a dash, and a long silence ends a letter or a word.
The decoder does not need to know the speed in advance. It sorts all beep lengths into 2 groups, takes the short group as dots, and measures every gap against that dot length.
What the decoder hears
A Morse signal is one tone switched on and off. Change the speed to see the beeps stretch or shrink.

How Morse Code Audio Decoding Works
Audio decoding works in 6 steps: load, find the tone, filter, threshold, measure and decode. The decoder converts the file to samples, finds the pitch of the Morse tone, tracks only that pitch, marks when it is on or off, measures each run and turns runs into Morse code.
Tracking a single pitch is what lets the decoder ignore speech, music and hiss at other frequencies.
From sound wave to letters
Load
The audio is decoded to raw samples and resampled to about 22,050 per second.
03
Morse Code Recordings You Can Decode
The decoder reads any recording with one clear Morse tone: amateur radio CW, practice files, video soundtracks, voicemails and puzzle audio. It accepts WAV, MP3, OGG, M4A and most video files.
Hand-sent Morse with uneven timing also decodes, because the decoder learns the dot length from the recording itself.
4 common sources
Record a CW contact from your receiver's speaker or line output. Narrow your radio's filter first for the cleanest result.
Upload the video file directly — the decoder reads its soundtrack. Use the video translator if the Morse is a blinking light instead.
Phone audio is band-limited but Morse tones survive it well. Save the voicemail as a file and upload it.
Escape room and geocache clues are usually clean computer-generated beeps that decode perfectly.
04
How to Get a Clean Morse Code Decode
A clean decode needs one tone, steady volume and a gap of silence between beeps. Most failed decodes come from two signals at once, heavy echo or a threshold set too high or too low.
Watch the strength graph: dots and dashes should stand above the red line and every gap should fall below it.
5 fixes for a better decode
0 / 5-
1 Move the threshold
If letters merge, raise the threshold. If dashes break into dots, lower it.
-
2 Set the tone manually
When two stations overlap, slide the tone filter to the pitch you want to read.
-
3 Record closer
Hold the microphone near the speaker and turn off fans or music to raise the contrast figure.
-
4 Trim long silence
Very long recordings take longer to scan. Trim them to the part that contains the Morse.
-
5 Use a file, not the mic
A direct file keeps the full quality. Microphone recordings pick up room echo.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I decode Morse code from audio?
To decode Morse code from audio, upload the recording or press Record microphone. The decoder finds the tone, measures the beeps and shows the text. Adjust the threshold if letters run together.
Can I decode Morse code from a YouTube video?
Yes, if you have the video or its audio saved as a file. Upload the file and the decoder reads its soundtrack. For Morse sent as flashing light in a video, use the video translator.
Can the decoder read Morse code with background noise?
Yes, the decoder handles moderate noise. It tracks only the Morse tone's pitch, so hiss, speech and music at other pitches are ignored. Very loud noise at the same pitch still causes errors.
Does the decoder work with hand-sent Morse code?
Yes, the decoder adapts to the sender's timing. It learns the dot length from the recording, so uneven or slow hand-keyed Morse decodes as long as dashes are clearly longer than dots.
What speeds can the audio decoder read?
The decoder reads roughly 5 to 40 WPM. Above 40 WPM, a dot lasts less than 30 ms and short gaps can blur together.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No, your audio never leaves your device. The file and microphone recording are decoded in your browser.
