Morse Code Quiz

A Morse code quiz is a set of quick questions that test whether you can read, write and hear Morse code. Pick a question type and a character set, answer 10–30 questions, and see your score with every miss to review.

Wrong answers play the correct code so you hear it immediately. Retry missed only drills just those characters.

Our quiz has 4 modes — read, write, hear and type — an optional 3–10 second timer per question, streak tracking and a one-click retry of the characters you missed.

What Is a Morse Code Quiz?

A Morse code quiz is a self-test that shows or plays a character and asks you to identify it. Each mode trains a different skill: reading written code, writing it, recognising it by ear and recalling it from memory.

Mixing modes is the quickest way to find gaps: many learners read Morse well but cannot recall it, or the other way around.

You see a code such as −·− and pick the letter: K. Trains reading charts and written Morse.

Quiz Character Sets and Levels

The quiz has 5 character sets, from 8 beginner letters to 36 letters and numbers. Start with the beginner set E T I A N M S O, which are the shortest codes, then move to the full alphabet.

Add a time limit once you score above 90%. Real copying leaves under a second per letter, so a 3-second limit is a strong test.

03

Morse Code Letters Most Often Confused

The letters learners confuse most are mirror pairs, where one code is the other written backwards: B and V, D and U, F and L, G and W, Q and Y. They have the same symbols in reverse order.

Drill each pair in Hear mode until the difference is obvious: B starts with a dash and V ends with one.

Each letter is followed by its mirror. Listen to both to hear the difference.

How to Improve Your Morse Quiz Score

You improve fastest by quizzing for 5 minutes a day and retrying only the characters you miss. The results screen lists every miss; press Retry missed only to drill them straight away.

Say the sound out loud — “dah-di-dah-dit” for C — while you answer. Linking the rhythm to a voice pattern speeds up recall.

5 habits of fast learners

0 / 5
  • 1 Retry misses at once

A second round on just the missed letters fixes them while the mistake is fresh.

  • 2 Use Hear mode most

Hearing is the skill that matters on the radio. Read mode alone builds a chart habit.

  • 3 Add a timer

A 5-second limit stops counting dots and forces instant recognition.

  • 4 Chase streaks

Aim to beat your best streak, not just your score.

  • 5 Practise between quizzes

Use the Morse code practice trainer for copy at full speed.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does the Morse code quiz work?

Choose a question type, a character set, the number of questions and a time limit, then press Start quiz. Answer each question; at the end you see your score, best streak, average time and every miss.

Which quiz mode should beginners use?

Beginners should start with Read mode on the beginner set, then move to Hear mode. Hearing Morse is the skill you need to copy real signals.

What is a good Morse code quiz score?

90% or higher means you know the set well. Add a 5-second timer at that point, then a 3-second timer when you score 90% again.

Which Morse letters are hardest?

Mirror pairs are hardest: B/V, D/U, F/L, G/W and Q/Y. Long letters such as Q (−−·−), Y (−·−−) and J (·−−−) also take longer to learn.

Can I quiz numbers and punctuation?

Yes, choose Numbers 0–9 or Punctuation from the Characters menu, or Letters + numbers for a mixed quiz.

What does Retry missed only do?

Retry missed only starts a new round with only the characters you got wrong, so you can fix weak letters straight away.
