Morse Code to Text Decoder
A Morse code to text decoder is a tool that reads dots and dashes and writes the matching letters, numbers and punctuation. Paste Morse code and the decoder turns each group of symbols into a character, instantly.

Select a red group to see which letters it is one symbol away from. Turn on auto-repair to fill them in.
Our decoder accepts 4 notations — dots and dashes, typographic symbols, spoken “di-dah” syllables and binary 1/0 timing — and flags any code that is not a real Morse character, with the closest letters it could be.

What Is a Morse Code to Text Decoder?
A Morse code to text decoder is a translator that splits Morse code into letter groups and looks each group up in the Morse table. The group ··· becomes S, −−− becomes O, and ··· −−− ··· becomes SOS.
The decoder first detects the notation you pasted. Dots can arrive as periods, middle dots or bullets, dashes as hyphens, underscores or minus signs, and some sources write Morse as syllables or as ones and zeros.
4 notations the decoder understands
The most common notation: a period (.) for a dot and a hyphen (-) for a dash, for example .... .. for HI.
Middle dots (·) and minus signs (−) from books, charts and websites, for example ·−·· −−− ···− · for LOVE.
Syllables that imitate the sound: “di” or “dit” for a dot and “dah” for a dash, for example di-dah for A.
Ones for signal and zeros for silence, for example 10101 for S. Runs of 3 zeros end a letter and 7 zeros end a word.

How the Decoder Reads Dots and Dashes
The decoder reads Morse code in 4 steps: normalise, split words, split letters and look up. It converts every notation to plain dots and dashes, splits at slashes or wide gaps into words, splits at spaces into letters, and matches each letter group to a character.
Spacing decides the result. ·− · (with a space) reads AE, while ·−· (no space) reads R, so a missing space changes the letter.

Normalise
Typographic dots, bullets, underscores and minus signs are converted to plain . and -.

Spacing Rules for Decoding Morse Code
Morse code spacing follows 3 rules: no gap inside a letter, 1 space between letters and a slash between words. In sound or light, these gaps last 1, 3 and 7 units, and written Morse represents them with nothing, a space and a slash.
If a message has no slashes, the decoder treats 3 or more spaces in a row as a word break, which matches how many radio logs are typed.

- Dot 0 ms
- Dash 0 ms
- Inside a letter 0 ms
- Between letters 0 ms
- Between words 0 ms

How to Fix Morse Code That Won't Decode
Morse code that won't decode usually has a missing space, an extra symbol or the wrong dash character. The decoder marks each unreadable group in red and lists the letters that are one symbol away from it.
Turn on auto-repair to replace each unreadable group with its closest letter. Check the result in context, because a one-symbol slip can match more than one letter.
5 checks for broken Morse code
0 / 5-
1 Look for joined letters
Two letters typed without a space form a long group that may match nothing. .-.-.. is often “.-. -..” (R D).
-
2 Count the symbols
No letter has more than 4 symbols and no number has more than 5. A group of 6 or more is usually two letters or punctuation.
-
3 Check the dash character
Long dashes (—), en dashes (–) and underscores (_) all work, but a letter O or a zero in place of a dash does not.
-
4 Mark word breaks
Use a slash between words. Without slashes or wide gaps, the whole message decodes as one long word.
-
5 Try auto-repair
Auto-repair picks the nearest real letter for each broken group. Read the result aloud to see which word makes sense.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I translate Morse code to text?
To translate Morse code to text, paste the Morse code into the decoder with a space between letters and a slash (/) between words. The text appears instantly, and you can switch it to uppercase, title case or lowercase.
Why does my Morse code show question marks or boxes?
A box (▯) or “?” means a group is not a valid Morse character. The group usually has a missing space or an extra symbol. Select the red group to see the closest letters, or turn on auto-repair.
Can I decode Morse code written with “dit” and “dah”?
Yes, the decoder reads spoken Morse. Write each letter as syllables joined by hyphens, such as di-dah for A, put a space between letters and a slash between words.
How do I decode Morse code without spaces?
Morse code without spaces cannot be decoded reliably, because the same symbols split in different places spell different letters. For example, ··· can be S, IE, EI or EEE. Add spaces where the pauses were.
Can this decoder read Morse code from sound?
No, this decoder reads typed or pasted Morse code. To decode a recording or a live signal, use the Morse code audio decoder, which listens to the beeps and writes the text.
Does the decoder support numbers and punctuation?
Yes, it decodes all 54 standard characters, including the numbers 0–9 (each 5 symbols long) and punctuation such as the period ·−·−·−, comma −−··−− and question mark ··−−··.
