Text to Morse Code Converter

A text to Morse code converter is a tool that turns letters, numbers and punctuation into International Morse Code. Type or paste any message and the converter writes it as dots and dashes, letter by letter, as you type.

Our converter writes the result in 4 formats — standard dots and dashes, typographic dots (·) and dashes (−), spoken “di-dah” syllables or binary timing — and shows how long the message takes to send at 5–40 words per minute (WPM).

01

What Is a Text to Morse Code Converter?

A text to Morse code converter is an encoder that replaces every character with its fixed International Morse Code pattern. The letter E becomes ·, the letter T becomes −, and the word SOS becomes ··· −−− ···.

The converter follows Recommendation ITU-R M.1677-1, which defines 26 letters, 10 numbers and 18 punctuation marks. The most common English letters get the shortest codes, so ordinary text encodes compactly.

02

How Text Becomes Morse Code

Text becomes Morse code in 5 steps: split, normalise, look up, separate and time. The converter splits your message into words and characters, converts lowercase to uppercase, finds each character in the Morse table, joins the codes with letter and word separators, and calculates the timing.

Characters without a Morse code, such as emoji or the # sign, are skipped and listed in a warning under the output, so the rest of the message still converts.

Split

The message is split at spaces into words, and each word into single characters.

03

Morse Code Output Formats

Our converter writes Morse code in 4 output formats: dot-dash, typographic, spoken and binary. Dot-dash text (. and -) pastes anywhere, typographic symbols (· and −) read best on screen, spoken syllables help you memorise rhythm, and binary timing (1 and 0) feeds electronics projects.

You also choose the separators. A space between letters and a slash (/) between words is the most common style, and our Morse code to text decoder reads all of these formats back.

04

How Long Does a Morse Message Take to Send?

A Morse message takes its total timing units multiplied by 1.2 ÷ WPM seconds. The word PARIS is 50 units long, so at 20 WPM one unit lasts 60 milliseconds and PARIS takes 3 seconds.

Letters with many dashes take longer: E lasts 1 unit, while 0 (−−−−−) lasts 19 units. The converter adds up every dot, dash and gap to show the exact send time for your message.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I convert text to Morse code?

To convert text to Morse code, type or paste your text into the converter. The Morse code appears instantly with a space between letters and a slash (/) between words. Press Copy, Download or Play to use it.

Can I convert lowercase letters to Morse code?

Yes, lowercase letters convert exactly like capitals. Morse code has no letter case, so “hello” and “HELLO” both become ···· · ·−·· ·−·· −−−.

Which characters can be converted to Morse code?

54 characters can be converted: the 26 letters A–Z, the 10 numbers 0–9 and 18 punctuation marks, including the period, comma, question mark, slash and @ sign. Emoji and symbols such as # or % have no standard Morse code.

What does the slash mean in Morse code?

A slash (/) marks the space between two words in written Morse code. It stands for a 7-unit silence. The slash character itself also has a Morse code: −··−·.

How do I write Morse code in binary?

To write Morse code in binary, use 1 for each unit of signal and 0 for each unit of silence. A dot is 1, a dash is 111, the gap inside a letter is 0, the gap between letters is 000, and the gap between words is 0000000.

Can I download Morse code as a file?

Yes, press Download .txt to save the Morse code as a text file. To save it as sound, open the Morse code audio generator and download a WAV file.
